The Whispers in the Static

[WARNING: PERCEPTION IS A FRAGILE THING. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.]
SUBJECT: The Whispers in the Static

The universe used to be quiet. Now, it screams.

Don’t make the rookie mistake of thinking the Whispers are a sound. They’re the background radiation of a broken universe, the psychic dissonance from the Rift where two incompatible realities grind against each other. It’s not a noise you hear with your ears; it’s a pressure, a frequency that vibrates just beneath the threshold of normal perception, and it frays the edges of your mind.

For the un-augmented, the baseline human, it’s a subtle poison. You feel it as a sudden, needle-sharp spike of paranoia. A wave of vertigo that makes the alley tilt for a second. The chilling, absolute certainty that you are being watched by something vast and hungry. It’s the world’s madness knocking on the door of your skull.

But for the chromed? Your augments are an open door. Your tech acts as a transducer, translating that unbearable pressure into a sensory glitch your brain can almost process. You get a flash of a vivid memory of a place you’ve never been. You see a splash of impossible color that isn’t in the spectrum of light. You hear a voice speaking in a language of pure mathematics and pain.

This is the real danger of the Whispers: it’s not just noise. It’s a signal. The more you listen, the more the patterns start to make a horrible kind of sense. You’ll see faces in the static on a dead screen. You’ll experience moments of dissociation, looking at your own hands and not recognizing them as yours . The Whispers are your connection to the world’s insanity, and if you listen too closely, you’ll start to agree with what it’s saying.
