Turning New Blood into True Believers

[INTEL BRIEFING: CAPTAIN’S CODEX]
SUBJECT: Recruitment & Loyalty (Turning New Blood into True Believers)

A captain with no crew is just a corpse with a fancy title. Your faction is your armor, your army, and your lifeblood. But loyalty isn’t a given; it’s a resource, and you have to earn it every single day. Getting new blood into your ranks is an art. Keeping them from bleeding out — or betraying you — is the real test of a leader.

The Silent Sermon: Recruiting Through Presence

Before you say a word, your reputation is doing the talking. The best recruitment tools are the ones that work while you sleep.

  • Paint the Walls: Your tag is your best recruitment poster. The glowing graffiti you burn onto the walls of your turf is a declaration of power and style . A fresh, bright tag on a contested wall tells every freelancer and new arrival that you are active, confident, and a force to be reckoned with. It’s a silent sermon that preaches your strength to the entire district.
  • Project Power: A faction with high Rep is a magnet. Win your turf wars. Run your businesses clean. Make a name for yourself on the Interlink. When the street whispers that your crew is the one making moves, the best recruits will come knocking on your door. You won’t have to find them; they’ll find you.

The Hard Sell: Active Recruitment

Sometimes, you need to be more direct.

  • The Audition: The best way to vet new blood is to give them a job. Approach a promising freelancer who’s been walking the path of the Survivor. Offer them a simple gig—a bit of muscle, a courier run. Watch how they operate. See if they have nerve. If they prove themselves, that’s when you make the real offer. The job was just the interview.
  • The Direct Approach: Keep your eyes open. The streets are full of talent. A Runner who handles a CA shakedown with style, an Outlander who brings in a valuable haul from the wastes—these are potential assets. A direct, personal offer from a leader carries weight. It shows you recognize their value.

Forging Loyalty: From Hire to Believer

Getting them in the door is easy. Keeping them from putting a knife in your back is the hard part.

  • The Initiation: A new member needs a proper “blood in” moment. Create a meaningful initiation ritual, a test that makes them earn their place and binds them to your code . It’s the moment a hire becomes a member.
  • Give Them a Stake: Loyalty isn’t free. A fair cut of the Cal is the bare minimum. True loyalty comes from giving your people a piece of the story. Help them grow their own legends. Give them responsibility. A crew member who feels like their own story is advancing under your leadership is a crew member who will fight for you when the walls close in.
  • The Code is Law: Your faction needs a manifesto, a clear set of rules that everyone lives and dies by. It gives them a purpose beyond just earning their next meal. It turns a gang of thugs into a true faction.
