Firearms in the Bastion

Read 4 minUpdated 2026.08.19
ARMORER’S NOTE. STREET SOURCES. READ IT BEFORE YOU BUY.

A gun in the Bastion is not a tool. It is a sentence you carry around half-spoken, and everyone who sees it reads the rest. That is what a firearm is for here, ninety-five percent of the time: worn, not fired. A holstered piece settles more arguments than a drawn one, and a drawn one settles more than a fired one, because the moment you fire you stop having a weapon and start having a problem the whole street can hear.

Understand that literally. The city listens. Every corner the Concord kept and half the ones it lost carry sensors that do nothing all day but wait for the shape of a gunshot, and when they catch one they log it, place it inside a few meters, and point the nearest patrol at the sound. The street has a word for firing inside the walls. You ring the bell. Ring it and the Civil Authority knows where you are before the casing lands, and the Authority is the gentlest thing that comes looking.

This is the whole reason the deterrent holds. The gun on your hip is quiet leverage. The gun in your hand is a countdown. People carry, and people almost never shoot, and the standoff that ends with both parties backing down the alley is not a failure. It is the city working the way it trained you. The ones who reach early are the ones nobody wants at their table twice, because they bring the bell down on everyone standing near.

Deaf and leashed

There are two kinds of iron in the Bastion, and the difference is not caliber. It is whether the gun is on the network.

A deaf piece is mechanical, off the grid, and stupid in the way that keeps you alive. No smart-link, no assist, nothing to talk to. It cannot be traced, cannot be jammed, cannot be reached by anyone with a badge or a hacking kit, and it will fire in a dead zone deep in the Wastes where nothing else will. It is also exactly as good as your hand, which is the price. The wrench-jockey line about the Static covers guns too: the smartest thing about a machine too simple to listen is that no one can whisper to it.

Leashed iron is the corporate dream: smart-linked, targeting overlays on your lens, recoil the chrome eats for you, a neural trigger that fires a half-thought before your finger finishes deciding. Better than you in every way a specification measures. It is also on a leash, and you are not holding the end. A networked gun in a city that logs networked things is traceable to you, jammable by the right kit, and legible to the Concord’s auditors as a line with your name beside it. Aurora and Zenith both run ad spots for chrome sidearms named like cologne. The hardware is real. It simply answers to more people than you.

The choice is the whole character. Carry deaf and you are telling the street you trust nothing you cannot hold. Carry leashed and you are telling it you can afford to be seen.

Where you are is what the gun means

Inside the walls, discretion is not manners, it is survival. A concealed sidearm is leverage nobody has to answer. A gun shown openly is a claim the Authority is obligated to test, and a long gun shown openly is not carry at all, it is intent, answered as intent. Out in the Wastes the logic inverts. There is no grid to hear you and no patrol to come, only the cold and the things in it, and out there open iron and heavy iron are just equipment for arguing with something that has too many limbs to reason with.

So the same rifle is a death sentence on a Sputnik corner and a sensible Tuesday past the gate. The gun did not change. The listener did.

The trigger is a door

Everything else in this city is a threshold you cannot step back across. The Blight only accumulates. The Render does not give the dead back the way it took them. A citation, once written, comes due. The trigger belongs on that list. A gun worn is potential, a held conversation, a thing that can still go either way. A gun fired is a decision that has already happened, and the city is built so that decision costs you, because here the irreversible act always does. Wear the sentence. Think hard before you finish it.
