The Calendar

INTEL BRIEFING. THE CALENDAR NOBODY PRINTS

Officially, the Bastion has one holiday and a pay schedule. Actually, the year has a structure, and knowing it’s knowing when this city is safe, when it’s dangerous, and when it’s briefly, strangely, kind.

Payday Monday. Weekly. The one rite everyone keeps. Treat it with respect; it’s the closest thing to a shared religion the ledger allows.

Founding Day. the Founding Calendar’s new year. Parades in Sputnik, the Lumina simulcast on every board, the procession of the Ignition Key, and fireworks after dark, launched, as they have always been launched, from the old queue-ground where Rust’s bazaar now stands. Uptown, it’s the best night of the year. In Rust, shutters close early, the Outlander stalls work the day in silence and charge double, and nobody argues the surcharge, because everybody knows what it’s even if nobody files it under grief.

The Dimming. Once a year, the Grid rests. Scheduled deep maintenance, one night, the whole city cold and dark by design, and the Bastion has grown a festival around the outage the way skin grows around a splinter. Open flame is legal for one night only; the streets fill with barrel fires and lamp processions; and hearth-law, the old law, the Wastes law, comes inside the walls for the night, no blood where heat is shared, kept at every fire, kept even by crews at war, because the Ember Truce is the one truce with no enforcement and no recorded violation anyone will admit to. Debts are settled or formally carried; carrying a debt through the Dimming requires saying so, out loud, at a fire, which is its own economy of shame and mercy.

And at certain fires, quieter ones, in the deep districts, the marked come to do the year’s other accounting. The Unburdening, what you carry into the new year, you carry on purpose. Effigies burn. Habits, debts, names. And threads. If you know, you know; if you don’t, stand at a brighter fire.

The Tenders don’t celebrate. The night she rests is their vigil, the one night they can listen to the Grid without the load singing over her, and what they hear sets the guild’s mood for the year. Some years they come up smiling. Ask them what they heard and you’ll get the same answer either way, which is a round for the table and a toast you won’t quite follow.

The Count’s turn. Not a city holiday at all. At the year-turn of the clan calendar, wherever a clan is, the Count is read aloud, the winters, numbered, and the year’s dead, named. It takes as long as it takes. If you’re wintering at a hearth when the Count is read, stand, shut up, and add your fuel to the fire without being asked. There’s no faster way to be adopted by the Wastes, and no faster way to be made cold than getting this one wrong.
