The Ascendancy

RECRUITMENT TRACT, ANNOTATED IN A SECOND HAND

The body is weak. The mind is code. The final upload is forever. Their house is the Neural Ascendancy Temple in Rust, a monastery built into an abandoned data center, chosen, the monks say, because the Voice is loudest in the wire. Newcomers surrender their devices at the door. The tract they hand you inside, with a Mnemonic’s margin notes, because you deserve both versions.

The doctrine. Flesh is the rough draft. Every ache, every craving, every stray amber flake working its slow edit on your cells, drafts decay, that’s what drafts are for. The wire is the clean copy. The Ascendancy teaches progressive translation, neural mapping in stages, sacramental backups, the self rendered gradually into the Interlink’s deep storage until, at the last, the body is set down like a worn tool and the person continues, entire, incorruptible, in the cold and perfect archive. They call the final rite the Final Upload. They speak of it the way other faiths speak of dawn.

Margin, second hand. Note what they’re promising. Not paradise. Escape. Same as the amber cults. Hold that thought.

The sting. The tract doesn’t print this part, and it’s load-bearing. Uploads work; the mapping is Relic-class technology and it demonstrably runs. But no translated mind, in the entire history of the church, has ever communicated back. Not one message, not one sign, from the far side of the Final Upload. The church calls this peace, finished files don’t fidget. The apostates use a shorter word, and the word is deletion, and the schism between those two readings has burned more than one chapel.

The mirror. Stand back far enough and you will see what the street saw long ago, this city hosts two churches promising escape from the flesh through opposite doors. The Ascended drown the self in the Rift; the Ascendancy drowns it in the wire. Each considers the other an obscenity. Neither can explain, when pressed, why their heavens sound so much alike.

The Null problem. Both doors claim the same martyr. To the Ascendancy, Null is the first witness, a mind that entered the deep wire whole. To the Ascended, he is the prophet who heard the god under the static and went to it. And there’s one claim, made exactly once, drunk, by a Mnemonic who has since declined every interview, that deep-archive storage, listened to raw, unfiltered, hisses at the same frequency as the Whispers.

Nobody reputable has repeated the test. Nobody reputable will.
