This city is a pressure cooker and everyone in it’s screaming a little. The cold, the hunger, the grinding static under all of it. So you go looking for an escape, a warm hour in the endless cold, and the city has a whole economy waiting for exactly that impulse. Just remember that nothing here is free, and the price is usually paid in more than Cal.
The corporate fix. Alterscape are the masters of sanctioned escape, and their product is the smoothest leash in the Bastion. The dream-lounger, you pay, you lie back, a thick cable thunks into the port at the base of your skull, and for an hour the world melts into a rented fantasy, a warm beach from the old world, a victory you never earned, a blue sky. Perfect, repeatable, clean.

The signage doesn’t say it, and everyone in the trade knows it anyway. A lounger has to play something, and Alterscape aren’t writing those hours from scratch. They’re playing shards. Warm ones. The budget catalog is synthetic and a little hollow. The premium catalog isn’t synthetic at all. The premium catalog is real memory, lifted, refined, licensed, and looped, and the best-selling hours in the city are the genuine best days of people who are no longer alive to object. You lie back in the plush chair and you live an afternoon that belonged to a dead stranger, and it’s the most real thing you will feel all month, and that’s precisely because it’s not yours. Alterscape sells you elsewhere by the hour. Elsewhere used to have an owner. The street has a line for the whole arrangement. The city drinks its dead twice, once as heat, once as dreams.
Watch the frames of the older parlors and you will see tally marks scratched into them, dozens, hundreds, and the story is that they count an addict’s nights under. That’s one reading. The trade has another, and doesn’t offer it.
Mood-stims. Emotions in a vial, confidence before a meeting, serenity to quiet the Whispers for an evening. Clean, efficient, and another way to keep a population numb enough to make rent quietly. The Whispers come back when the dose wears off. They always come back a little louder, which is either tolerance or interest, and Alterscape has no incentive to find out which.

The flesh market. The oldest trade in the newest hell, run in the neon-slick booths of the underbelly. In a city of cold chrome, real un-augmented warmth is rare and priced like it, a fully organic partner commands a fortune from a Vaulted suit desperate to feel something human, and a Synthetic offers the opposite luxury, a cold mechanical perfection with none of the mess. But the transaction is the start of a story, never the end of one. That streetwalker may be a Mnemonic with a hidden rig, paid to lift a secret from a client’s mind at the worst possible moment. That client may be a Sanguine, shopping for a different kind of warmth entirely. Intimacy here is the most dangerous game in the city, and it’s the one everyone plays.
The heretical escapes. For some the normal vices stop working. The Static gets too loud and they need a bigger scream to drown it, and they go looking past the sanctioned menu into the raw shards, the un-refined Echoes, the direct feed. This is the deep end, and the trade treats it as exactly what it’s, contact with the same substrate the Whispers ride, taken neat. The people who go there aren’t looking for warmth anymore. They’re looking to hear the voice more clearly, and they will, and that’s the whole tragedy of it.
