Slang and Speech

A MNEMONIC’S GUIDE. WHO SAYS WHAT, AND WHY SO QUIET

Language in the Everwinter is load-bearing. What you say, how you say it, and above all how loudly, every register is a survival decision that hardened into culture. Learn the music before you improvise.

The singing rules. Melody carries into the Static, and the Static keeps what it’s given. So the Bastion sings the way it does everything else, carefully, indoors, the walls hold it, and Chrome’s clubs can be as loud as grief requires. In the open air, you sing together or not at all; a chorus blurs into the general hum, but a lone voice in the open is a beacon, and the street has a proverb about it, solo is a signal. In the Wastes, you don’t sing. The Sounding hum into the ice, low, work-tones; the harvest crews chant only inside the rope-line; and everyone, everywhere, goes quiet in a Stillwind.

The work songs. Chrome’s forges run on chant the way they run on power, the press-crews time the cycle by call and answer, and the chant’s real function is a safety system, because the verse tells you where every hand is. When the chant stops mid-line, machines get shut down. Nobody has to order it.

The hand-cant. The Wastes’ second language. Wind kills voices, masks eat faces, so the clans built a sign-cant of a few dozen gestures that cover everything that matters, shelter, water, count, blight, quiet, run. It’s terse, ancient, and shared across feuding clans without exception, because storms don’t check affiliations. City Runners have started learning it. The clans permit this, with the visible amusement of grandparents watching a toddler swear.

The trail-marks. The written Wastes, scratched waypoint code on stone and steel. Hearth-direction, water, cache, and the one every traveler learns first, the turned-ground sign, three short strokes canceled by a fourth, which means what grew here isn’t what was planted, and is never, ever scratched out as a joke.

The naming rites. A Runner is named twice, born once, and named again by the street after first blood or first winter, whichever arrives first. At the street-naming, the birth name is sold to a Mnemonic for safekeeping; see the rites of the Return for how that loan is repaid. Outlander children carry the storm season they were born under, or an ancestor’s name rested for a generation, because names need a winter fallow so the dead aren’t crowded. The Ascended take geometry-names at initiation, written forms with no clean pronunciation; what you hear spoken is an approximation, and they will tell you, serenely, that the real name is the one the Static uses. The Vaulted keep lineage names because for them the name is the collateral, their word is a credit instrument, and they spend it like one.

A working glossary. The street’s terms of art, for fresh thaws and worse,

  • thaw, a new arrival, still steaming from the pod. Not an insult until it’s.
  • static, lies, noise, propaganda. Don’t sell me static.
  • glitch, an unreliable person. Terminal diagnosis, socially.
  • ghost, someone off-ledger; no bio-sig, no record, no rights.
  • cold, exiled from hearth-law. The worst thing you can be in the Wastes.
  • furnished, chrome that came with a previous tenant. Priced accordingly, both directions.
  • the Render, the reclamation works; also, dying. He’s for the Render.
  • the Count, the clan calendar; also, the record of wrongs. Being “in the Count” isn’t an honor.
  • queue-chit, a Winnowing number tag. Worthless plastic. Don’t say that out loud in Rust.
  • the amber, the Blight, familiarly. Naming it casually is street armor.
  • lanterns, the lights under the Sheet. Not discussed further, by convention.
  • solo is a signal, proverb, don’t stand out in the open, acoustically or otherwise.
  • paying the Stranger, the door-bowl coin; by extension, any small hedge against vast things.
  • reading the walls, checking faction tags and conduit names; doing your homework.
  • making the Return, dying. Said gently. The one euphemism everyone honors.
