What the Street Believes

FIXER’S COMMUNIQUE. SMALL RITES, KEPT WIDELY, ADMITTED NEVER

The Corpos have a creation myth and the cults have their gospels, but the actual religion of the Bastion is smaller than either and older than it looks, a folk practice assembled over sixteen generations by people who will tell you, individually, that they don’t believe in any of it. Watch their hands, not their mouths.

The saints. Uncanonized, unlicensed, everywhere. The Stoker, a Tender who, the story goes, fed himself to a dying district substation during the Grid Wars and kept forty blocks warm for a night on his own heat; Tenders deny it happened and leave a wrench crossed over a valve on his night all the same. Saint Anya of the Crossing, the street’s borrowed version of the Outlander legend, patron of anyone walking into the cold with a reason; her token is a journal page, real or fake, folded three times. The Stranger, no story at all, just the rule, which is that you leave one Cal-coin in the bowl by the door for the Stranger, because when a stranger shares your fire, you can never be sure they aren’t them.

The rules. Touch the conduit before a job; the warmth remembers who’s polite. Never whistle indoors; a whistle carries into the Static, and the Static keeps what it’s given. Never thank the Grid; you pay her, and thanks implies a gift, and gifts imply a debt beyond Cal, and nobody sane wants to owe her more than the meter says. And the oldest one, the one that’s in the lullabies, follow no lamp you didn’t light.

The lullaby. Every district has a version. This is the Sputnik one, four lines, older than anyone singing it,

Hush now, the snow keeps falling,

gold in the dark and calling;

follow no lamp you didn’t light,

and morning will find you, my darling.

It’s a pretty song. It’s also, if you read it cold, a safety procedure with a melody, and most of the folk religion is the same, accumulated survival instructions of a city that learned them the expensive way, dressed as superstition so children will keep them before they can understand them.

[TRANSMISSION END]

And there’s one rite that outranks the rest, because it isn’t about luck. The clans teach it, the city adopted it, nobody owns it, and the Mnemonics who’ve tried to trace its author report the trail forks and keeps forking. It’s said at the door before a Wastes walk, said under the breath when the Wisp starts ticking, said with the eyes closed when the whisper gets a name right. They call it the Count of One, and the name is the joke and the point, the clans count the many at year-turn, and this is what you count when you’re the only fire left.

I am not asked to be brave.
I am asked to be mine.

My name is mine. My debts are mine.
My hands are mine, whoever built them.
My dead are mine, wherever they keep warm.

The whisper knows my name.
Knowing is not having.

I do not answer. I count.
And when it stops, I am still the one counting.

What I keep, returns.

Runners with no time for verse cut it to four words, I count what’s mine, and the four words work. Whether the last line answers the clan chant or the chant answers it is an argument nobody wins, and both sides recite the whole thing anyway.
