Survival in the Wastes

CLAN PROTOCOL. TAUGHT BEFORE THE FIRST WALK. RECITED UNTIL WRONG BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE

Your Cal won’t warm you out here and your name won’t stop anything. The country runs on protocol, and protocol is the accumulated record of everyone it killed. Learn the words before the walk.

Rope. Clip in before the weather, not during. Unclip for nothing, not for a dropped pack, not for a voice you know just off the line. The rope rule has no exceptions and every exception is a story the clans tell on purpose.

Seal. When the amber falls, sealed gear, taped seams, no bare skin, and don’t stare. Every flake is a dose. The count you take today is the change you carry next season, and the country doesn’t refund.

Listen. The silence out here is full. Pressure drop, a wrong stillness, your Wisp ticking without a source, all of it is warning, and the clans treat the prickle on your neck as an instrument, not a nerve. If the Static sharpens, shelter. If it turns musical, shelter faster.

Read. Ash is the old world and tells you nothing. Crystal tells you everything, growth on rock means saturation, warped flora means a hot zone’s edge, and a fresh conversion track means leave the way you came. The land keeps a ledger. Walk it like you’re being billed, because you are.

Manage. Nobody works this country clean. Exposure accrues, and the change it buys, the sharpened senses, the patterns surfacing in the static, is real, and the clans use it, carefully, the way you’d use a tool that’s also using you. The city’s word for staying pure is a fantasy with a subscription price. The country’s word is a rate. Know yours, check it at every hearth, and decide on purpose what you’re spending it on.

Trust nothing familiar. The rest of that rule is in the bestiary, and the bestiary is the one chapter of this book the clans make children learn before they learn the songs.
