The Four Weathers

OUTLANDER’S CODEX. WHAT THE SKY DOES, AND HOW EACH ONE KILLS YOU

City people think the Wastes has one weather, cold. The cold is the floor. On top of it, four weathers matter, and each one kills a different way. Learn all four names before you need them.

Whiteout. The honest one. Wind and white and the end of geometry, lose your line and you will walk a circle until the cold finishes the arithmetic. Rope-drill is life, every hand roped, every rope logged, nobody unclips for anything, including the voice that sounds like someone you know just off the line. Especially that.

Amberfall. The beautiful one, and I lead with that on purpose, because the beauty is the mechanism. The contagion snow comes down heavy and unhurried, amber glowing in the crystal lattice of every flake, falling with the ash of the old world, each flake catching the neon on its way, and it drifts through the sodium light and settles on the rails and the awnings and your upturned face like the city is being gilded. There’s nothing left in the world lovelier to stand in. That’s the whole trick. Every flake is a missionary for the new logic, and an Amberfall doesn’t kill you tonight, it kills you later, a debt instead of a blow, so fresh thaws stand in it grinning like it’s confetti while the change writes its first line into them. Sealed gear, taped seams, breather discipline, and the hard part, the only part that matters, don’t stare. It wants to be watched. Charge them for the treatment after, and try to be kind about it, because you stared too, once.

Stillwind. The wrong one. No wind at all. Pressure. The air goes tight, the Static rises until it’s the loudest thing in the world without making a sound, and the Whispers come up through the floor of your mind like water through a bad seal. You shelter from a Stillwind the way you shelter from cold, except what you’re keeping out is the quiet. Nosebleeds. Shared dreams across a camp, the same dream, which nobody discusses at breakfast. One rule and it’s absolute, nobody keeps watch alone in a Stillwind.

The Bloom. The one that will ruin you for every other sky. Some nights, over deep Blight country, the dark ribbons violet and amber, an aurora that moves like it means something, and the corrupted ground answers back, the flora lighting from inside, the Glass Taiga ringing without a breath of wind, the Whispers going almost, almost musical, until the whole horizon is a cathedral nobody built and everybody can hear. The Ascended save their highest rites for a Bloom and for those few minutes you will understand them completely. Every survivor who has watched one tells you the same two things, always in the same order, that it’s the most beautiful thing they have ever seen, and that for a little while, some minutes they can’t account for, they wanted to walk out into it and keep walking. The ones who did aren’t available for comment. Watch it from inside the walls, with someone whose hand you can hold, and don’t, whatever it plays, sing back.

[LOG ENDS]

When the amber falls I go quiet. That is not a malfunction. That is manners.
