The Echomaws

DATA-ECHO. PARTIAL RECOVERY. HANDLE AS EVIDENCE

Some ground remembers. A place that held enough dying, enough terror, enough loss, keeps replaying it, the Mnemonics call the ground an Echo Point and price it like the hazard it is. Walk one unprepared and a stranger’s worst moment arrives in your body, pain with no wound, grief with no name attached, a recording played through you. The whole ruin of Atomic Wonderland reads this way, one continuous playback of the day the world broke, and the survey teams that mapped its edge did it in twenty-minute shifts.

That’s the ground. The Echomaws are what the ground grows.

Deep Echo Points collect them, forms that assemble out of the playback, wearing pieces of the recorded moment, a coat, a gait, half a face, repeating fragments of it on loop. Whether an Echomaw is a creature that feeds on saturated ground or the saturation itself learning to walk is an open dispute in the trade, and the field guidance is identical either way. It can’t be shot, because you can’t kill a stain. It can be endured, and it can be outlasted, because an Echomaw never leaves its Point, which makes the map the weapon.

Survivors of a witnessing agree on the method. Keep your feet moving toward the edge of the Point. Name things that are yours out loud, your street, your debts, the counter you eat at, because the playback fills whatever’s empty and a mind holding its own inventory has less room. Clan escorts through known Points talk the whole way through, not to comfort you. To keep you furnished with yourself.

Mnemonics pay well for verified Point locations and better for recordings taken at the rim. What they do with them is their trade. Why the reads keep getting easier is a question for their chapter, and they’d rather you didn’t ask it at the counter.

[RECOVERY ENDS. THE REST OF THE FILE DID NOT SURVIVE PLAYBACK.]
