The Clean

ZENITH LIFESTYLE PAMPHLET, WITH STREET ANNOTATION

Purity is a practice. That’s the pamphlet’s first line, and for once the pamphlet is telling you the truth, just not the way it means to.

The faith. Zenith’s old promise, Purity, stopped being a product line generations ago and became a religion with a billing department. Its adherents, the Unblemished, live the practice daily, filtered rooms, glove etiquette, the scouring rites at dawn and dusk, the gene-audit as sacrament, taken quarterly at a Zenith clinic, results sealed and worn. The visible sign is the white thread, tied at the wrist at your first clean audit and worn until your first confirmed stain, at which point it’s surrendered. Publicly. There’s a small ceremony. It’s one of the cruelest things this city does with a straight face, and attendance is always good.

The economics. Purity is a subscription. Audits cost. Filters cost. Lapse the payments and you lapse the soul, and Zenith’s collections language is, in the original and without irony, “spiritual arrears.” The street annotation here is one word, carved into the pamphlet rack outside the Sputnik clinic, re-carved every time it’s buffed out, tithe.

The crisis. Now the wound at the center of the faith, the one every Unblemished carries and none will name. The Blight doesn’t respect the subscription. Worse, the cleanest systems burn fastest. You know this; it’s in every field manual; pristine biology is kindling. Which means the doctrine’s best students are its brightest fires, and every deacon has watched a perfect record, a lifetime of white thread, convert in a season. The faith survives this the way faiths survive everything, by folding the contradiction into the liturgy, the stain is a test, the burn is a witness. Say it enough and the words hold. Usually.

The silence. And behind the whole practice, unmentioned in any pamphlet, the perfect argument nobody makes. Meridian. The Purity project’s masterpiece, the sealed city, the doctrine built at municipal scale. Clean, warm, lit.

Empty.

The church schismed once over what Meridian means and resolved the schism by never mentioning it again. If you want to end a conversation with an Unblemished, you know the word. Use it kindly or not at all; they’ve been kinder to this city than the city admits, and their rites, whatever else they’re, are the only story in the Everwinter where refusing the Blight is itself a way of life, with its own cost, its own beauty, and its own doors. Resistance is a path here, not a lack of one. Remember that when the amber looks generous.
