The Long Dark

A MNEMONIC’S GUIDE. THE CONTESTED COUNT

Ask three people what year it is and you’ll get three answers, and every answer is a politics.

The Corpos date from the Founding. AF, the Founding Calendar on every terminal and every pay stub, built so that history begins with the Grid’s first fire and everything before it’s weather. The clans keep the Count, winters since the Scattering, held in memory and read aloud at the year-turn, because a people who were left behind don’t trust anyone else to keep their time. And the Ascended date from Riftfall itself, Year Zero, the first revelation, which tells you everything about what they think the wound is.

Lay the three calendars side by side and the Long Dark divides into ages. The names below are the street’s names. The Corpos have cleaner ones. Use the street’s.

Riftfall. The Prometheus material places the firing beneath Atomic Wonderland. The sky curdles inside a season, or so the recovered account runs. There’s no slow freeze, no decade of decline; the old world’s last summer simply doesn’t arrive, and it never arrives again.

The Scattering. The lift. The Ark ships, the berths, the lists of who was worth a seat. The official history calls it the brave corporate exodus. The clans call it the Scattering because that’s what it looked like from the ground, the engines rising like a new constellation, leaving, while the queue below watched its own breath. The Outlander clans descend, in the main, from the people on the ground. Corporate history calls their ancestors “expedition deserters,” which is a remarkable thing to call people you left in a parking lot. The clans don’t argue the point. They kept the Count. Arguing is for people without records.

The Silence. The orbital centuries. Up above, stasis and station air. Down below, the age of small fires, the clans crossing the dark on hearth-law and memory, learning the Blight as neighbors learn a river. Everything the Wastes knows that the city doesn’t was learned here, at a cost the Count records one winter at a time.

The Return and the Founding. The probes turn around. The drop-ships fall. First Fire, the Grid ignites, and the Bastion has a heartbeat. And in the first rationed winter, with the walls half-built and the heat finite, Aurora ran selection at the gates. Numbered chits, lists, a queue in the snow, and a decision about each person in it. The street calls it the Winnowing, quietly, and mostly not at all. The queue-ground was never built over. Rust’s bazaar floor sits on it today, and the Founding Day fireworks are launched, every year, from that exact spot. Ask an Outlander why they don’t look up.

The Grid Wars. Decades of proxy conflict between the four great Corpos over who held the Warmth Grid’s valves, fought with sabotage crews and deniable factions, ended not by victory but by exhaustion, the Concord, which created the Civil Authority as a permanent armistice with a badge. The CA were never police. They’re a ceasefire that learned to write citations.

The Quiet of Meridian. The second city seals its gates during the worst storm season the Count remembers, and never unseals them. See the codex entry. Bring nothing back.

The Long Now. The present age. The amber falling, the Count disputed, the calendars drifting apart by a day here and a day there, as if even time in this place has stopped agreeing with itself.
