Playing the Sanguine

Read 3 minUpdated 2026.08.16
PLAYER GUIDE // THE STILL ONES, PLAYED WELL

You have met the Sanguine already, in the bars and the late salons. This is how to be one, and the first thing to get right is the thing the street half-knows and gets half-wrong.

There are two grades of crystal, and the difference is the whole character. The need is raw amber. Unrefined crystal from the Wastes or the market, consumed regularly, which holds your own conversion at bay. Miss it and you weaken, and the change you have been outrunning starts to catch up. That’s survival, it’s grim, and it’s not what anyone romanticizes. The want is refined crystal, cut, dosed, and prepared, cleaner and steadier than raw amber, the difference between rations and a real meal. The refined trade is jealously guarded, so the Salons forbid buying outside their own tables, and the whole supply runs through brokers with waiting lists. A Sanguine surviving on raw amber is stable and sad. A Sanguine with a Salon’s table behind them is powerful and owned. Most of your story lives in the gap between the two.

The Houses are secret societies, organized into Vows, each with its own philosophy about what the hunger is for and what a Sanguine owes the people they take from. Secrecy isn’t paranoia for its own sake; it’s because the refinement trade only works while the city tolerates it, and the city only tolerates it while it stays quiet and consensual and brokered. A freelancer who feeds carelessly threatens every Sanguine in the city, so the Salons police their own harder than the CA ever could.

Play the restraint, not the hunger. The Sanguine’s signature is stillness, control, the drink untouched, the exact tip, the predator who has decided not to, tonight. The horror and the appeal are the same thing, this is a person holding a door shut, gracefully, in public, for their whole life.

How does it start. There’s no application, and there are no young Sanguine. The state is earned at the top of the Ascension, decades of controlled exposure, longevity mastered, and the look announces it, pale, hairless, features gone faintly pointed, because that’s what the crystal does to flesh it preserves. A Salon watches a candidate for years, and the watching is the test. One account of a turning circulates, sold by the subject herself, and it reads less like a bite and more like a long negotiation that ended in an exchange she still won’t describe, past saying her sponsor held her hand through the worst night of it and has answered for her conduct ever since. Two Houses come up when brokers talk. The Vesper Salon, who treat restraint as the whole religion. The Halcyon Rooms, who keep the refinement trade’s list and defend its quiet like a border. Neither recruits. Both notice.
