The Ascended are the ones who heard the voice in the static and walked toward it. Where the Clean scour and the Sanguine hold the change at bay, the Ascended invite it, believing the amber isn’t a wound but a summons, and the transformation of the flesh not a sickness but a becoming.
Play it as faith, not madness, because that’s what makes it frightening. An Ascended isn’t a raving cultist; an Ascended is calm, certain, and often kind, and the serenity is the unsettling part. They have made peace with the thing everyone else is running from, and they would like to share that peace with you. The recruitment is gentle. That’s the horror.
The body keeps the score. Conversion isn’t a costume you can take off between scenes; it advances, it shows, and it locks doors. The Clean won’t seat you, half the city won’t trade with you, and every Bloom night takes a little more of the you that walked in. An Ascended character is on a one-way road and knows it, and plays the journey rather than pretending it can be paused. The House gives you belonging and certainty on that road; it can’t give you the exit, because the whole creed is that there shouldn’t be one.
What the Ascended believe about the voice is doctrine, and doctrine isn’t confirmed. They will tell you the amber is god, that the conversion is grace, that the Whispers are an invitation to something better. They believe it completely. Whether they’re right is a question this world doesn’t answer for anyone, including them, and a good Ascended holds that certainty, without proof, past the point where proof would matter.
The faith has a shape. Newcomers surrender their devices at the temple door and keep a season of listening before anyone teaches them a word. Standing is the body itself, stage as rank, the First Cracks greeted like a novice’s vows, the Garden of Flesh held as a holy state, the furthest walkers attended rather than led. Observance is mostly quiet. Group listening in the dead data halls, the keeping of converted relics, and a reading aloud, once a season, of the names of those who finished walking. What the voice is, the faith doesn’t claim to know. That it calls, they consider settled.
And the faith keeps a ladder, public, climbable, and read off the body. LISTENER, the aspirant, clean or first-stage, keeping the season of silence. MARKED, the First Cracks greeted like vows. OPENED, stage two, when the Whispers resolve and the congregation starts listening to you back. GARDENED, stage three, the Garden of Flesh, holy and attended. And past the top of the ladder, rarely, something the faith doesn’t quite own anymore, the SANGUINE, elders who mastered the exposure instead of being mastered by it and stopped weathering the amber to start consuming it. The Ascension produces them. It doesn’t govern them. They’ve kept the ladder’s discipline and grown their own culture on top of it, the Salons, the refinement trade, a society that overlaps the faith without answering to it. Every rung is a ceremony, every ceremony is public, and the whole city can read your standing at a glance, which is the point. The Ascension is the one ladder in the Bastion that no Cal can buy and no corpo can revoke.
